Kevin the Robot

So many children have enjoyed demolishing old phones using screwdrivers and scissors. We have talked about all the bits that make up a phone, especially the circuit boards and wires. We then glued all the bits together to make Kevin the Robot. Watch this space for stories of his adventures.

Busy Children

Mrs Kelly decided to bake some scones this morning. Sinead, Priyanka and Greer were great helpers. They had to rub in the butter and then knead the dough.

Now Mrs Kelly cut the dough mixture in half and then in half again.
This made quarters. The dough was now in 4 pieces.

Xanthia and Pippa had to brush on the milk.

Pippa and Sophia were tidying up after baking. Great work girls!!
It was going to be the boys turn later on.

How many words can you write??

We built sky towers, bridges and tunnels to go on our road.

Exploring How to Cross the Road Safely

Next week we are going to go on a trip into town. We are doing an art trail. Because of this we have been learning lots of things about being safe on and around roads. Today when we made a town road we had to include a railway line just like in Hastings. We practised crossing after a train has passed. We also included crossings with buzzers just like in town and practised waiting for the pretend buzzing signal before we crossed.
It was fun working together in a group. We learnt to share, to wait and to listen to our class friends.

Hats hats hats!!!

We made hats for our wearable arts parade. We were so proud because we made them by ourselves. We got to walk around in a circle in front of our hub. It was funny.

Busy Kids in Room 6 and 7

We were building a hotel with straw construction sticks. Look how high it is!!!

During Matariki Week we learnt how to make a star with strings. It was great how we could work together. We also played knuckle bones. What a lot of fun!!

Congratulations to Jazz and Che for getting "Player of the day". A great effort. Keep it up.

Discovering how vehicles move

We have been talking about how vehicles move. Last week we decided to have some challenges to test out some ideas. We discovered that a zipline can make vehicles move because gravity pulls them towards the ground. We also discovered that a wind force can make vehicles move in water. The boats with a tall sail worked the best.

Gardening begins!

With Deb's help and plants from her garden we learned how to dig a hole and place the carrot seedling in, covering it firmly with soil.

U yuck! The worms in the worm farm are busy eating the food scraps to turn them into worm wee. We will use the wee on our garden to help the vegies grow.

Making another hill of rubbish

We saw the trucks dumping so much rubbish. Then we watched the big crusher truck squashing all the rubbish. It takes a long time to make the hill. It didn't even smell!!

Visit to the Transfer Station and Landfill Area

Chris bought her rubbish to the table and we had to think about what could be recycled. Did you know our school sweatshirts are made out of recycled drink bottles?

We watched the grader push the rubbish into special areas. Some of it got pushed to the shoot where a truck catches it and takes it to the Landfill Area.

Kirat, JJ and Tenequa were recycling the rubbish. Plastic goes in here!!

Joziah had a bag of newspapers. He found the newspaper bin easily. Great recycling Joziah!!

Wow don't we look fabulous in our high vis vests. We wore these to keep us safe.

Chris told us it took 16 years to make a huge hill of rubbish. All the rubbish is pressed down and layered to make a hill. Then they put soil over the top and plant grass. They have little pipes to let the air out!! There's Mrs Kelly standing by the big hill that is made of rubbish.
